Paper Bag Masks: A Workshop Inspired by Saul Steinberg
Thursday October 29th 6 to 7PM
All ages welcomed above 8 years old
In the late 1950s, artist and New Yorker cartoonist Saul Steinberg began drawing faces on plain brown paper grocery bags. His friends slipped them on and went about ordinary life (cocktail parties, kitchen tables, living rooms), and photographer Inge Morath captured the results. The masks were deadpan, funny, and a little unsettling: a sharp wink at the polite faces we all put on for the world.
In this workshop, we’ll take Steinberg’s humble materials and big ideas as our starting point. Using brown paper bags, paint, markers, collage scraps and a few surprises you’ll invent a character and give it a face. Who’s the person behind your mask? A nervous dinner guest? A bored executive? A version of yourself you don’t usually show?
We’ll start with a short look at Steinberg’s drawings and the mask photographs, then dive into making. Expect bold line work, exaggerated features, and plenty of laughter. At the end, we’ll put on our masks for a group portrait in the spirit of the originals.
No drawing experience needed. Just curiosity and a willingness to look a little ridiculous.
Photos are property of Saul Steinberg foundation and other online finds
